Gold for Blond

SIBA_NE_14_132We are pleased to announce that The Nook Brewhouse has scooped 4 awards, including 2 gold, at the prestigious SIBA North East Beer competition in York.

Blond  (4.5%ABV); a distinctive blond coloured ale with a smooth malt base and citrus overtones, came top in the Premium Bitters and Bottled Gold Beers categories.

The bottled version also secured a bronze overall against bottled beers produced by breweries from across Yorkshire and the North East. A second Bronze was awarded to the brewery’s Grumpy Mule Breakfast Stout (5.2%ABV), in the Speciality ales category. The smooth, rich stout is infused with freshly ground coffee produced by Meltham based coffee roasters Grumpy Mule.

Judging took place at the York Beer and Cider Festival held at York Knavesmire on 17th September.   Competition was fierce with the 71 judges sampling over 176 cask beers and 137 different bottled beers before the awards were handed out.

The Nook Brewhouse is run by brother and sister team Ian Roberts and Sheila Sutton whose family have run the celebrated Nook pub for 50 years.  Well known as a real ale destination, The Nook has appeared in the CAMRA Good Beer Guide for over 35 years and they began brewing their own beers in 2009.

Sheila Sutton said: “We are delighted that Blond, our flagship beer, has gained this recognition in both cask and bottle.  Since we started brewing it in 2009 it has been rarely been off the bars in our two brewery taps in Holmfirth and it has also proved very popular further afield with beer lovers throughout the country.”

Grumpy Mule Breakfast Stout will be a regular feature on the bar in the pair’s newest venture The Tap House.  The revamp of one of one of their existing sites in Holmfirth is due to open in October and will focus on food created with local produce paired with the ales brewed on site including some of the brewery’s other speciality beers such as Elderflower Blond and Cherry Stout.
